About the April 2004 cover

Photographer Jeff Topham has been working closely with Severn Cullis-Suzuki since 1997, when they first met on the Black Sea while making a documentary for the CBC.

Despite all their travels, he's always impressed by how much she loves and appreciates her own backyard. For this Common Ground cover he shot Severn, clothes on, at Vancouver's famous Wreck Beach.

"Sev's words are very powerful and so important - I only hope that my images can help add to that power," says Topham, whose work with Cullis-Suzuki has taken him recently to South Africa, Japan and the Amazon.
